Interview

Which is the part you enjoy the most about choreography?

I love making musical numbers and telling stories through movement.  Making people feel.  Making people laugh.  I love that it was me that took a viewer on a journey with my work.

You have the third installment of the Kissing Booth series coming out August 11th. What is it like choreographing for a sequel?

The Kissing Booth 1, 2, and now 3 were so much fun to work on.  The third one was a lot of fun to work on.  Both the second and third films were shot at the same time.  The fans are in for a treat.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has dance helped you?

Dance is therapy.  Dance is healing.  Dance helped me stay out of trouble as a kid and it is an outlet as an adult.  Now I get to tell stories as a choreographer and a director and it is very fulfilling.  I have learned patience and compassion and many other life lessons through my work.

Who are your idols?

As a kid I idolized people like Gregory Hines, Baryshnikov, Crazy Legs, Ben Vereen, Debbie Allen, Bob Fosse, and more.  As I got further into the industry and my career I don’t idolize anyone. However… I have many great mentors whom I respect and love.  Kenny Ortega is one of them.  The skills I have learned from that man I will forever be grateful for.

If you weren’t a choreographer and director, what would you like to do?

I have many passions.  I love to write, edit and even create outreach programs to help people like the homeless.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

I believe there are a lot more opportunities nowadays because of social media.  People have their careers in their hands now.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

I am living it.  A family and work balance is so important.  Doing what I love while surrounded with people I love.
