Terah Lynn - Interview

When did you start to get interested in music?

I’ve always been interested in music. Singing it is another story though.
I am an empath, a feeler, so music has always had a profound effect on my emotions. And the beauty of a good song brings me peace. When I started singing, it just amplified that peace so it is my ultimate therapy and cartharsis.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

I don’t think there’s anyway to prepare you for who I am

Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?

I enjoy the creative expression. As an artist , writing a song, creating anything really, is an integral part of my well being. If I’m not creating, I’m not okay.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?

I’d say it has done that in a sense. Letting the depths of your soul out in song can’t do anything but teach you about yourself, what’s inside of you. So far as healing? Eh, I’d say its more of a soothing…

What does music mean to you?

Music is my ultimate connection with myself and with God. It’s part of what I was created to do, so when I am leaning into that, into who God created me to be, I feel the closest to Him.

Who are your idols?

People I look up to? First and foremost, my mom. I’ve never met someone so strong, elegant and resilient. I feel like if there is any good in me, it’s come from the God in her.
Musically, I feel such a connection with Johnny Cash. I feel the torture of his soul through his music, and it makes me feel a little less lonely in my own torture.

If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?

Oh wow, that is a good question. Obviously something creative, but I’m from the mountains so I am most okay when I am doing some type of physical work. Putting those two things together somehow. I really don’t know what that would be? Landscaping? I really don’t know.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

This is a tricky thing. I know it seems like there are more opportunities because of the advancing of technology and social media. Sure, it has made exposure easier but it also saturates the industry. And when there are so many people out there, it’s a lot more competitive which then makes it harder to be picked out of the “crowd.” And because of that, we’ve gone from the era of being discovered and invested in to an age where the artist has to do the investing, build the following, basically do everything themselves before any label will even look at you. It really is a saturated market and what used to be unique and original is now just normal and carbon copies.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

I’m sure any artist would like to make it “big” but honestly, if I could just make enough money to live comfortably doing what I love, I really cant imagine anything better. How many people get to make their living doing what they are most passionate about?
