Alisha-Liston

Singer, Songwriter, Aerialist & Actress

About

Alisha Liston is a 13-year old singer, songwriter, actress and aerialist who was born and raised in Southern California. During her tween years, Alisha found it challenging to find age-appropriate music she could relate to. This inspired her to start writing and releasing music that speaks to pre-teens and the challenges of that age group.

To date, Alisha has co-written and released over a half a dozen singles, and, on August 27, 2021, she released her first EP titled, Beautiful Illusion.

Interview

When did you start to get interested in music?
I really don’t remember when I started getting interested in music. I think it’s one of those things that always have been a part of me. My mom says when I was in preschool; I’d spend hours going up and down the stairs singing at the top of my lungs whichever Disney Princess song was popular at the time.

I also have a picture of me sitting on my Dad’s lap with a guitar from as early as two.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

Great question. I think if I were an advertisement, my slogan would be “I Love You, Take Care of Yourself.”

Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?

I think it’s a tossup between creating the songs and performing live onstage. My team; Idrise Ward-EL and Adrian Lopez are super talented and supportive. I love how we work together and bounce ideas off each other. There is so much respect and admiration. They are amazing.

And, when I perform, I really love seeing how the audience responds to my music, especially, when I can jump off the stage and go out into the audience and just be with them.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?

Wow, that’s an amazing question, and I have to agree. Writing music has really helped me sort out all my thoughts, and understand myself better. I feel like music is a safe place to explore surreal emotions through surreal imagery, and I find it very healing.

What does music mean to you?

For me, music has always been my go to; and, I started writing music to sort through what was going on in my head. My songwriting book was my diary. After taking a few classes and working with some amazing people, I wanted to start writing music for others.

All the songs I wrote are things I really needed to hear at that time in my life, and I thought there might be someone else out there like me who needs to hear what I needed to hear. So, my art is my way of trying to reach out and say, “Hey, it’s going to be okay. You’re not alone.”

Who are your idols?

Musically, I am really inspired by Kelly Clarkson, Sophie Pecora, Nightbirde, ‘idkhowbuttheyfoundme,’ and Cavetown. They’re absolutely incredible. My producers are another huge inspiration for me. They are so talented and incredible to work with. But, I think even more important than all their talent, they are just good people.

If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?

If I weren’t an artist, I think I would want to be a cinematographer, a full time circus artist, or a fantasy writer.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

In general, I would say there are more opportunities for new artists. With digital streaming and social media platforms, artists can get their music out there without being signed to a label.

I think this past year has been challenging, in that, live, in-person performance opportunities have dwindled, but it’s getting better. Last month, I was able to perform at the Orange County Fair, and I’m hoping that trend of being able to perform live, in-person will continue.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

In some ways, I feel like I have my idyllic life. My biggest goal is to be able to keep doing what I’m doing. I love being able to own my own artistry and create music that I feel is truly mine.

I can’t tell you how great it feels when someone tells me how much my music meant to them. It’s like the greatest feeling in the world, and I want to always be able to feel that.
