Interview

Let’s start with Season 3, Bryon and Bracia’s relationship goes through a lot this season. How did you prepare emotionally for exploring those more complex and vulnerable moments between them?

It’s funny going back and playing a younger age because a lot of what the characters experience is similar to what I experienced when I was in high school. I’ve had those moments where, you know, everything starts off all rosey and exciting but then after that initial “honeymoon phase”, you start to go through those tumultuous feelings. So I just fall back to past experience and tap into those feelings of young love.

Bryon has always come across as cool and laid-back, but in Season 3 we start to see cracks and deeper layers. How would you describe his personal growth this season?

This season we start by seeing Bryon and Bracia all smiley, but she does tell him that to “keep the girl”, he has to audition and try to do the play. So by the end, Bryon reaches this realisation that the work doesn’t stop once he gets the girl he wants; he has to keep doing the work and open up as the relationship progresses in order to strengthen their bond.

What was your reaction when you first read the script for the season finale, especially regarding Bryon and Bracia’s big decision?

I was on the edge of my seat reading the scripts throughout the season! I wasn’t sure which direction the writers would take concerning the relationship seeing as Bracia was unsure of her feelings for Bryon. But I think they both needed a bit of a test to strengthen their relationship and come to the realisation that they love each other and are ready to take their relationship to the next level. It was a bit of a rollercoaster, but I’m always happy to see love win at the end.

You’ve been with this character for a few seasons now, what have you learned from Bryon, and is there any part of yourself you see in him?

Yeah, I think Bryon has a quiet confidence and calm to him that I admire and would like to in-still more of in my life. And something Bryon and I have in common is that we’re both lover boys hahaha. He’s willing to do the school musical instead of playing football and I did something similar when I was in school. I joined rugby to impress a crush when I was younger instead of doing theatre, so the reverse but when I read the first script I was like “yeah, that’s something I’d do”.

Ginny & Georgia is known for blending humor, drama, and serious social issues. As an actor, what’s it like working on a show with that kind of range?

Honestly the writers are incredibly talented and they give everyone so much to work with. It’s an honour to get the chance to work on a show that talks about real life issues that a lot of people can relate to and a show that people can see themselves in. And the way it balances that with humour and drama makes coming into work such a treat, because it also stretches the acting muscles in a way that challenges everyone and forces you to bring your A-game in order to honour the script and story.

There’s a lot of emotional tension in the show especially with Georgia’s trial looming. How does Bryon’s story fit into that wider narrative, in your view?

The love story between Bryon and Bracia provides a bit of levity and some non life threatening drama in the midst of all the very real and high stakes situations that are happening around us. And also it allows them to be there for their friends in their time of need and help out where they can.

Fans really connected with the chemistry between you and Tameka Griffiths (Bracia). What was it like working with her this season and building that on-screen relationship?

I’m so incredibly lucky to have a scene partner like Tameka to play opposite of because she’s such a lovely person and it’s so easy to connect with her. On our first season working together, we made a point of hanging out outside of set to help build that chemistry and she really helped me settle in on the show. I think fans connect with our chemistry because there’s a genuine love and admiration for each other even off screen that translates really nicely.

You’ve built a strong presence as Bryon, but what kind of roles or stories are you hoping to explore next in your career?

I’m a huge fan of certain sci-fi shows and one of my favourites is Doctor Who, so I’d like to do some outer space or time traveling in the future. I feel like that would be so much fun and it’s the type of movie or show I’ve always wanted to do since I was a kid.

Outside of acting, how do you stay grounded and creative when you’re not on set?

I really enjoy watching anime. I feel like it’s an escape from thinking about what people in the industry normally think about when watching a show or a movie, like “oh, how’s this person acting” or “that set design looks good”, etc. I get to just enjoy the stories told and some can get super creative and inspiring. I also really enjoy travelling and experiencing new cultures through travel and food.

Lastly, what message or feeling do you hope audiences take away from Bryon’s journey in Season 3?

I’d hope audiences watching can leave feeling more hopeful about love and understanding that there are ups and downs, but love persists. And to also take time and be there for friends who seem like they need an ear or a shoulder to cry on, like we saw when Bryon was comforting Maxine during the musical.
