Interview
You started your acting journey in Ottawa, Ontario. How did growing up in Canada shape your acting career, and how did it feel to be selected by Premiere to showcase your talents at Walt Disney World?
Growing up in Canada you have so many talented and famous Canadian actors to look up to, which made me feel like I could do it too. When I was selected for Premiere I felt very lucky but I still had to do a lot of work before actually getting to go to Disney World. Once there it was a lot of fun meeting the other kids from Canada and around the world and I made so many good friends.
You mentioned that the show Ricky, Nicky, Dicky & Dawn inspired your passion for acting. What was it about that show that drew you into the world of acting?
Nicky Ricky Dicky & Dawn made me want to act because it looked like they were having so much fun! I also became really interested, wondering how tv shows actually worked and what was going on behind the scenes to bring the show to life.
Your lead role in the independent short film Wooden Spoon gained critical acclaim. Can you tell us more about your experience working on that project and how it helped you grow as an actor?
I was nervous as it was my first time on set for a short film and it was a lot different than the commercials I had done but the cast members were all experienced actors and they helped me out a lot. The film deals with some difficult topics that unfortunately some families have gone through. However, there were some really funny moments too, I remember one scene in particular where I had to eat cereal and make it messy. In the end it was very soggy – I did not want to see a bowl of cereal for a week after that.
In The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, you play Leroy Herdman, a mischievous character. What was it like preparing for that role, and how did you connect with Leroy’s cheeky personality?
Spoiler alert – I love playing tricks and joking around with my family and snacking, so I think that was a big part of my preparation for the role. Leroy had so many fun scenes where I got to throw snowballs, eat popcorn and chase the other kids around.
You’ve had the opportunity to work alongside notable actors like Judy Greer and Lauren Graham. How has working with such experienced talents influenced your acting approach?
Working with a number of well-known, talented and successful actors was a little overwhelming at first but I soon realized that everyone was super friendly and fun to be around. I also learned that while there are many different styles and approaches to acting, there are some things everyone has in common, never taking yourself too seriously, and being positive, friendly and easy to work with.
You’ve also appeared in commercials for major brands like Nintendo, Lego, and the Toronto Blue Jays. How do you approach acting in commercials compared to acting in film or television?
Commercials are usually one short scene shot over the course of a day or two. However in films, it can be multiple scenes shot over multiple days or weeks with much different themes. In both cases though, it comes down to how you interpret the material and responding to the director’s vision.
Balancing acting with your education and weekly mentorship at LB Acting Studio must be challenging. How do you manage to refine your skills while also working on various projects?
The balancing act between acting, mentorship and school can be tricky, but it’s about managing the priorities based on the schedule. The good thing about being on set is that you get one on one tutoring in your downtime which keeps me on track with my schoolwork.
You’re passionate about animal welfare, particularly dogs. Could you tell us more about this passion and any specific initiatives or causes you support?
My Mum works in the veterinary field and my whole family loves animals, so we have always had dogs at home. I am not old enough to help out in an animal shelter yet but I am hoping that in a few years, I can do volunteer work. Our family currently supports the Ottawa Humane society with donations.
You have some exciting upcoming projects, including one with Johnny Knoxville. Can you share anything about that project or what it’s like working with someone known for his wild and unique style?
Now this was fun! There is lots of improvisation and things get super hilarious and over the top. You will all have to wait and see this one…but get ready for real belly laughs!
When you’re not acting, you enjoy video games, skateboarding, and building intricate Lego sets. How do these hobbies help you relax and recharge in between acting roles?
Because these hobbies are so far removed from the acting, it gives my body and mind a total break. I kind of immerse myself in the world of games and lego which helps me to relax and skateboarding gets me outside and moving when I want to burn off some energy.
