Interview

When did you start to get interested in acting?

I started taking acting seriously about four years ago. I enrolled in more classes and worked with a coach consistently. I’ve been performing on stage since I was very little starting with dance, and some musical theater. I’ve loved getting to expand my storytelling skills with acting. I am so fortunate to have multiple outlets to share my art.

If you were an advertisement, what would your slogan be?

Kate Roman: Full of Surprises!

What part do you enjoy the most about acting?

I love how in acting you really can’t predict anything. There are so many moving parts. You may naturally have some expectations going into a scene, but when you’re in the moment, anything can happen. That’s the beauty of it, each pass in a new experience, you just have to stay grounded in the moment and allow whatever happens to take its course.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal. In which aspects has your art helped you?

I 100% agree with this statement. Acting gives an artist a safe space to explore their emotional complexities in a more interesting way. Through my training and experience filming, I have learned more about myself when I’m vulnerable, and have truly allowed myself to feel and go through my emotions rather than suppress them. If I’ve had a tough day, dance is an ideal way to release all that tension and can be extremely cathartic.

What does your art mean to you?

My art is very special to me, and always evolving. I am so grateful that I have the ability and opportunity to express myself creatively. I tend to be my biggest critic, but the more I create, the more I am slowly able to let go of the idea of perfectionism and appreciate joy in the simple process of making something. I am so grateful to have multiple outlets to express my artistry; a huge reason for this is thanks to my amazing, supportive parents.

Who are your idols?

Emily Roman, my sister, is my biggest role model. She’s an amazing actor, dancer and singer, and all-around person. She’s taught me so much my entire life and I have so much love and respect for her. I also think Sydney Sweeney and Ariana Greenblatt are both very talented and so entertaining to watch. They each have such grounded and amazing performances in every production they are a part of. I love a really funny show or movie too so I admire any actor who can deliver great comedy!

If you weren’t acting or dancing, what would you be doing?

I’d definitely be an athlete – I thrive in a team environment but also love individual sports. I have a strong competitive spirit and I’m sure I’d be doing a combination of track and field, swimming, wake surfing, soccer, tennis, or golf (all of which I do occasionally!). But in another life, I’m a surfer living in Hawaii, running my own açai bowl stand on the beach.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new actors? Why?

That’s a good question. It really changes from year to year, and the last five years have been completely unusual. Before the pandemic things were more predictable with how casting worked: there was a pilot season, and we knew what to expect on average at different age ranges (busy under 12, not so busy in the teen years and busy again once you turn 18). Since there is so much more streaming content now, and after the writers and actors strikes, so much is different. Influencers and nepo babies are trying to get into TV and film, and some don’t have the skills. I would say there are probably less opportunities since so many people are trying to break into the business – it’s more competitive than ever.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

My idyllic life as an artist is surrounding myself in an environment full of inspiration. Whenever I travel to LA or NYC, I always feel a new energy and spark of creativity. I feel my creative side is most nurtured while on set, so honestly just collaborating with talented peers in a safe space is all I can ask for.
