About
Cheri Moon has been at the forefront of the music scene for most of her life and is not slowing down anytime soon. The singer/songwriter and actress recently re-released her dance club hit “House Arrest” mixes with accompanying music video (released May 18th) and celebrates her first-ever Grammy nomination under her children’s performer alias ‘Snooknuk’ for her work with “All One Tribe” and their nominated single “We’re All The Same” (distributed by Bob Marley/Tuff Gong International).
On March 8th, 2021 in honor of International Women’s Day, Cheri released a self-written female pop anthem entitled “Ain’t I A Woman” which Cheri performed as a part of the inspiring, all women performer line-up at Kukuza Fest: A Salute to Black Women in Family Music which aired virtually on April 10th from Washington, DC. Cheri proudly sang ‘Aint I A Woman’ in the first ever Black Women Family Music Festival.
The festival was in part a response to the controversy surrounding the latest Grammy awards (only White artists were nominated for Best Children’s Album). The goal was to not only entertain children and families alike, but to educate them to all the incredible possibilities that are in front of them. The ‘salute to women’ theme highlights and celebrates the industry that is rich in diversity and serves a safe and inclusive place for diverse children and families around the world.
"FASHION ICON WITH HER MIC ON!"
Interview
When did you start to get interested in music?
I always loved singing and performing even at a very young age. As a little girl I used to walk around the house singing all the time and I still do to this day. Music and performance are just my nature.
If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?
FASHION ICON WITH HER MIC ON!
Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?
I enjoy the performance aspect of my talent the most. Doing a show is like together a presentation, collecting all the elements that make the visuals stimulating for the audience and I enjoy that part very much!
Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?
I love that I can write and produce songs as well but sometimes that part can be frustrating.
What does music mean to you?
My music is my Expression! When I sing it’s pure enjoyment for me. I make everything into a song and the more I do, the more I know I was born to sing and write music. When I’m writing songs for myself as an artist, generally they come from my soul. I’m lucky to have these abilities and know how to use them.
Who are your idols?
In Music: Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Aretha Franklin, Elton Jon, Freddie Mercury & tons more! In General: My Mom, Oprah, all the parents, and others that support and champion children in the Arts!
If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?
If I wasn’t musically inclined I’d probably do Photography, Styling, or Producer. I Love FASHION just as much I love being creative.
Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?
I think with all the new platforms that enable and empower independent artists nowadays there are more opportunities. I know sometimes it takes money to make certain moves, but with all the different things you have access to, you certainly can compete. You don’t necessarily have to move to a big city anymore, you can reach audiences worldwide from your little computer.
These are definitely perks I didn’t have growing up. I’d say the ball is in your court as an artist more now than ever.
What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?
I think ultimately if I could spend most of my time doing a combination of live performance, voice acting in a TV show/movie musical and writing songs for animations, and just being a part of wonderful projects that inspire, I’d be a Happy Camper!
Which are your upcoming projects?
I’m finishing a Dance music Album, starting a new Children’s album, and working on some Holiday content.
