Abi Mia - Interview

When did you start to get interested in music?

Music has always been a part of my life in some way but until recently it was more of a hobby and a fun expression than something I was pursuing seriously as a career.

For me it really started in March 2020 at the start of the pandemic. During the first lockdown I was unfortunately not able to work much due to the restrictions but that gave me a lot of time to really think about what was important to me.
Music has always been in the back of my mind, something that I wanted to pursue but I was never in the right frame of mind or never felt it was possible until last year.

I felt very inspired and realized that music was something I had to pursue as a career as it is where I feel most excited and like I am fulfilling my potential. I realized that if I was going to get up the courage to finally reach for my music dream that it had to be now while I had all the time to improve my skills, to start writing again and to record and release singles.

My debut single ‘Fly Your Way’ is precisely about this! It is about having the courage to go for your dreams, to recognise your strengths and to choose the right path for you in life. Not live a certain way because of what others may expect of you. I am so grateful to have had this time to realize what I was meant to do and I am going to continue enthusiastically working hard to build my career as a singer-songwriter.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

Sing, smile and put in the work!

Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?

I most enjoy the power that music has to bring people together, to connect through emotions and important messages as well as just having fun too!

It is that universal language that everyone can understand and enjoy! Music as the potential to be so positively powerful and that is amazing to me!

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?

Music has helped me to become comfortable and confident with whom I am as both a person and an artist. It helps me to express myself in an authentic, truthful and empowering way, which is very important to me.

It has also thrown me into a world of amazing musicians and artists who I can connect with and learn from in different ways! There is so much to always learn and I know it is important to keep working hard and learn from others as well.

What does music mean to you?

Music means so much to me. It is a way of expression and creativity as well as something I can do to unwind and to sort out my thoughts! It enhances life so much and I am so privileged to be able to sing and songwriter and to share my music with people.

Who are your idols?

I would say I have ‘inspirations’ rather than ‘idols’. I am inspired by many strong female artists such as Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, Emily Sande, Demi Lovato and Amy Lee just to name a few!

I love the fact that these women are very vocally skilled as well as having music that really means something and can influence the world for the better!

If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?

I also have a huge passion for health and fitness and actually also currently run my own fitness business. I love lifting weights myself as well and used to compete in Weightlifting competitions! Hopefully our gyms will reopen soon as I can get back to that passion too!

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

As a new artist myself, having only started at the beginning of the pandemic, I am not really sure how to compare the opportunities now to those there were before. I haven’t had the opportunity to be part of the music scene yet!

Certainly in London there are not many chances to perform live (if at all) at the moment due to our lockdown restrictions but hopefully things will open up soon and I can get going with some live performances.

I feel there are a lot more online opportunities though! Online competition and live streams seem to be happening a lot which is great!

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

I would love to be able to have a balance between performing/touring, songwriting for sync opportunities, recording hit songs and having the time to experience the fun things in life like travelling, spending time with my family and of course lifting weights!

I would love to be able to live comfortably off my music career and would be amazing to be able to collaborate with at least one of my inspirations! Got to aim high!

Ideally I would love to get to the point of doing stadium tours and having famous singers wanting to sing my songs as a songwriter! I would also love to have a good and respected reputation within the industry as a hard worker and to be someone people want to work with!
