Interview

When did you start to get interested in writing and directing?

Back in 2008 I was producing music for rap group and decided to shoot a movie to promote the album. I was always interested in the movie side but never had the time or capital to proceed. The group wasn’t as serious as I was and I actually fell in love with the filmmaking process… I mean from script to screen.

The projects didn’t have the sheen and impact I wanted so… after realizing the guys I was working with would rather be anywhere but working on this and serious… I decided to take the budget I had pulled together for their project and enrolled myself into UCLA’s extension program for directing! Here I am.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

He took a lickin’, But kept on tickin’!

Which is the part you enjoy the most about writing and directing?

I’m a lover of the process. Taking a concept out of thin air and developing the entire thing. Character development, act structure manipulation, creating the strongest story possible… Then! Camera/lens selection, location scouting … The works!!! I LOVE THE PROCESS!!

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has your journey helped you?

I feel every project has a chunk of you in it. Thorough this process I see therapy in healing a challenging upbringing, overcoming major generational and environmental obstacles, and trying to be a light to those still figuring it out. I long to be the voice I wanted to hear as a kid to others of all ages and walks of life.

What does writing and directing mean to you?

Everything! I’ve worked jobs that paid great money and was miserable. Art isn’t chosen by the artist… It chooses you! if you deny the call… you die a little more everyday. I promise you.

Who are your idols?

My mentors for film are Martin Scorsese, Stanley Kubrick, Antoine Fuqua, Spike Lee and Michael Mann.

If you didn’t like writing and directing, what would you like to do?

I really don’t know… Anything creative where I can express myself through my artistic side.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

MY GOD THERE IS MORE! Growing up there was no TikTok, Instagram or any internet or social media. You can learn what I did at school online or create something with your phone and go viral! No film company or record company needed. Technology has made it to where you can shoot a quality project with a $1500 dollar camera! The game is wide open!

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

Making a tremendous amount of money doing what I love. helping those who need it and teaching my kids/grandkids the value of process, morality and a dollar. If I only have to worry about outdoing myself or my last project… That would be bliss. Me vs. Me is always the match I choose. I live for it.

Which are your upcoming projects?

The Block Trilogies Vol.1 “Dark Days, Darker Nights” The Block Trilogies is a modern day urban folklore series created and produced Me! Described as an anthology / trilogy series, each volume will contain 3 short stories with small monologues between these grim tales. Delivered by a celebrity host. The Trilogies are quite dark in tone and will center around a different theme each volume, be it love, horror, etc.
