Painter & Writer

About

Bianca Turner is a self-taught painter and writer. The artist holds a PhD in Economics and postgraduate studies in marine biology. Over 25 years ago she started to paint, using this hobby as a relaxation therapy because her managerial job in the American corporations was very stressful. After her father passed away, she had to take some time off from work.

While mourning, Bianca started to focus more on creating art. At some point she had a large inventory of paintings and due to her background as an economist, she realized that her art must be seen, must come out of her studio. Therefore, she started to do a lot of research regarding what would be needed to become a professional artist. The painter was feeling that she had to move forward from the emerging artist tier to the next one.

In the past eight years she researched, learned and practiced various marketing techniques in order to put her work in front of the targeted audience. With a lot of discipline and allocating at least one hour a day for her PR campaign she was successful in becoming an internationally recognized artist. Her works started to travel the world and be showcased in galleries, museums and art fairs. However, being trained to always work in a team (this is the American managerial culture), Bianca felt the urge to help other artists to experience the passion that she has for creating art and the pleasure of being in a permanent vacation. When you do what you love, you won’t work one day in your life.

In 2021 she started to write her first book that she published as an artist and economist: “The Business of Art”. It took a lot of dedication to complete the book and her effort was rewarded at the beginning of 2023 when she traveled to Romania as a guest professor at the West University of Timisoara, the Faculty of Visual Arts and Design. That was the moment when she received a real feedback from the doctoral and masterly students who told her that the book/lecture brings them the hope that they can be successful in their artistic career and become entrepreneurs working their job, instead of being hired in the retail or hospitality industries.

When the artist was surrounded by all these artists she realized that she does not have a job, but she has a career as an artist and a writer. In less than ten years Bianca had over 100 group exhibitions and 10 solo exhibitions. Her art hangs in private and corporate collections and in museums in the USA and South Korea. In the near future she will focus on bringing out her second book that will address the needs of the art curators, galleries and art dealers. The difference between her books and what can be found online with regard to the art world is that she mostly wrote keeping in mind her own experiences as an artist and not as a theoretician.

Bianca is also involved in various charity events in Los Angeles and abroad because she believes in the power that an artist has to change the world to become a better place. She is firm convinced that an artist should represent hope for the public; that’s why she likes to say: “I am hope” and not just “I hope”. We can all make a difference in this world, one step at the time. For her, art also means “the definition of infinity” and she is convinced that she will create for the rest of her life.

"Art is the definition of infinity / I am hope"

Interview

When did it all start?
It all started 25 years ago when my significant other brought home a small artist kit including a few canvases, oil paints and various sizes brushes. It didn’t even cross my mind that the painting kit was in fact not for me. I saw it in the kitchen and I started to paint. I was so engrossed in what I was doing that when I finished painting on all of the canvases I continued to paint on shoes boxes. In time, more and more art supplies started to appear in my house and since then I’ve never stopped painting. So far I was lucky because I did not experience the artist’s block and I was a very prolific painter.
If you were an advertisement, what would your slogan be?
Art is the definition of infinity / I am hope
What does your career mean to you?
My career means freedom, independence, originality, passion, love for life, meditation, harmony and a permanent vacation. To summarize it in one word: Happiness.
What is your main motivation?
The legacy that I could leave behind me, the gift that I could offer to the world, the help that i could give to so many people in need.
What is the part you enjoy the most? And the worst?
I enjoy spending time in my outside studio, painting while listening to music and allowing my imagination to flow on any surface I use. I feel extremely content after 10-12 hours of work in the studio, when the sweet tiredness sends me to sleep.

Although I am an economist, I do not enjoy the business aspect of this industry but I know that it is necessary because I do not believe in the myth of the starving artist. I have to find a happy medium between the two industries and, at least, I know that with my discipline and the fact that I have a daily routine, I can find a way to complete my business chores fast and effective.
Who are your idols?
Salvador Dali, Erté, Henri Rousseau, Leonardo da Vinci, Friederich Nietzsche, Jean-Paul Sartre, Nikos Kazantzakis, Carl Jung, Banksy, Eugen Ionescu and Mircea Eliade.
In case you need a break in your career, what else would you like to do?
Travel to space but since that dream mostly won’t come to fruition, I would like to learn how to do glassblowing.
Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?
A lot of artists consider that everything was already created by their predecessors. I think that the art defines the infinity. Nowadays artists have multiple ways to express themselves, a large array of art supplies and various technologies to create art from the traditional one to the sophisticated 3D digital art. That is empowering for all of us, in this field. I am aware that AI is also creating art – I still believe in the power of creation that humans souls and minds have. “The work developed by the AI” should never become a competition for the artists. Nothing can compare with the originality that comes from our brains.
What would your idyllic life be like?
Live and paint in Maui, in Hana (in the middle of the jungle), a few feet away from the beach and near a waterfall that enters the waves from the tropical rain-forest.
What are your next projects?
I am getting ready for the official launch of my first book in the USA, I have a lot of lectures planned for 2024, a few solo exhibitions in Los Angeles for this year and next year, and a one year exhibition in Paris, France from October 2023 to October 2024. I am also focusing on writing my second book and on various charity events in Los Angeles and abroad.
