Interview

When did you start to get interested in music?

I’ve been mesmerized by music as long as I can remember. If I wasn’t listening to my grandfather playing classical music on his grand piano, I was listening to my mother playing and singing. When I was very young I joined in, singing along with my six sisters. I wrote my fist song when I was ten. I had notebooks everywhere, scribbling poetry all the time and still do to this day. When I wasn’t writing or singing, I was dancing.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

She is the instrument, a muse, Julianna Muse.

Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?

My favorite part about music is its ability to unite people, compel them to exist on the same frequency. That’s its greatest power.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?

Music has helped me to express and channel difficult, complex and swells of emotion. It’s helped me to define myself as a person, love myself and walk with confidence.

What does music mean to you?

Music is personal, it’s universal. Music is everything.

Who are your idols?

My musical idols are many of the household names from the 80’s Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna. I also love Aretha Franklin, Jewel, Wynonna Judd. Bonnie Raitt, George Michael and Van Morrison.

If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?

I would be a healer. For the past decade I’ve grown a healing arts practice actually; massage therapy, drum circles, expressive arts therapy. All these therapies still include music though! It’s hard for me to deviate away from it.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

It seems like there are more opportunities for artists because of social media platforms. People can get their voices heard in an unprecedented way. In our hands, we have access to our own success.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

Music helped me through an extremely difficult time in my life. I want to pay it forward and help someone else who needs my unique voice.

Fiona Apple and Tori Amos’ music for example, helped me to heal parts of myself that I’m not sure anything else could. I think sometimes, what if they played small and never shared their voices? I would be at a loss, so I want to do the same for someone else.
