Marlock - Interview

When did you start to get interested in music?

When I was 5 years old, I found a book my dad had about the different instruments in a classical orchestra. I quickly identified the trombone as the instrument I wanted to play and I joined the local music school at the age of 7. I was very shy as a kid so my dad had to join the music school as well to convince me to join. It is the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

Join the emotional rollercoaster!

Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?

The dopamine inrush when a song you are writing comes together and you cannot get the melodies out of your head. Also playing live, there is nothing quite like playing songs from the bottom of your heart and seeing people engaging with them.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?

That statement definitely resonates with me. After playing music for years in different bands and orchestras, it got to a point where I felt the need to write my own music and release it. It became therapy for me. There were a lot of feelings I needed to get off my chest and writing music was my way of dealing with them. And it still is.

What does music mean to you?

Absolutely everything. I live and breathe music. It has been a fundamental part of my life since I was a kid and it is the only constant in my life. Music is there for me when I feel lonely, when I am happy, when I want to dance, when I feel sad,…

Who are your idols?

The artist and bands I admire and look up change over time. However, John Mayer has always been a constant there. His music and the variety of styles he plays is what motivated me to write my own songs and develop my skills. Another artist that has influenced me a lot is BANKS, especially with the production of her songs. And more recently Dermot Kennedy, who I have been following for a few years.

If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?

Can you not like music? I cannot conceive that!

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

I think there are definitely more opportunities but at the same time the market is more saturated than ever. Streaming platform have given independent artists the opportunity to get their creation out in an easy way which is brilliant. At the same time, that means that it is difficult to stand out and build a fanbase because there is a lot of noise and people’s attention span is more limited than ever.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

Selling out Wembley Stadium whilst still being able to keep total control of my creative output.
