Nathalie Miranda - Interview

When did you start to get interested in music?

Since I was a baby I’ve always loved to sing and listen to music. As a child I was so shy so I never sang in public, only in my bedroom. My parents didn’t even know that I could sing.

I remember watching MTV and thinking that’s what I want to do when I’m older; I want to make music and inspire people like my favorite artists inspire me.

So yes, I guess I’m still working towards that goal.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

There’s nothing wrong with being different. Never change yourself for anyone.

Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?

I love the way it brings people together. There are very few things that can do this, and music is definitely at the top of that list. And it inspires people to do great things.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?

Music has helped me express myself in a way that isn’t always acceptable in ‘real life’. I’m quite shy as a person and I find that it’s hard to get my opinions heard.

With music, I can say what I feel and put it a melody. I can take on another character with each song and explore different aspects of my character that people may not ordinarily expect from me.
Music has taught to be unafraid and more importantly, to be myself.

What does music mean to you?

In a word,  EVERYTHING.

Who are your idols?

Number one is Freddie Mercury. He is everything I could ever hope to be; a phenomenal vocalist, songwriter, performer, and a kind soul.

I’m also greatly inspired by Christina Aguilera. She is a strong, powerful female in this industry and she supports women so much. And obviously, her voice is a true inspiration. I have studied her songs and vocals so much over the years, she truly is amazing. I would love to duet with her!

I love the classic singers too like Aretha, Etta James, Stevie Wonder. I guess I have many inspirations!

If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?

I’ve always been interested in archaeology and history. I have an obsession with the Tudor period in English history, and the Ancient Egyptian period too.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

I think there are both more and fewer opportunities for artists.

There are more opportunities because of the internet and social media. You can reach so many people in one go now. But equally, I think it’s made it harder to get your voice heard, because everyone is doing it! And for me, I’m finding it hard because I don’t sound like the usual pop voice, and that’s both a positive and negative thing for me.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

Interesting question!

I would like to be able to make music and make a living from my music. I’d love to tour the world and take my music to as many countries as possible too.
