Sealskin - Bio

Born and raised in Russia in a multicultural family of Armenian, Russian and Mongolian roots, Margo aka Sealskin was always drawn to music, art and mysticism. After finishing her first career – linguistics in 2014 Margo moved from Russia to Barcelona and began studying music production. Here came the name Sealskin which is very symbolic and powerful for her. Sealskin is a magical artifact that represents connection with the wild, the ocean, the origin. She believes that the name you take has a meaning and power.

Since 2017 she has been creating and releasing music on a net level label Sealskin Music (formerly Yquesello Records) managing the project as an artist, songwriter, composer and producer. Soon as her experience grew she began producing emerging artists.

Initially Sealskin started as a project of alternative electronic music with a personal sound, deep and touching melodies. Then came experiments and as her interior search was heading towards the roots and spirituality, she began interlacing more and more organic instruments which brought to collaborations with ethnic and traditional folk musicians (Hovhannes Karakhanyan, Faris Ishaq). In the end of 2020 Sealskin made a further step into liberation of her roots through voice performance and choice of stylistic elements. So were born such tracks as Spirit Song, Mope c Toбoй, Ethnic Flow, Nu Po Cap Da Eh, where the artist developed a more shamanic and tribal sound.

Sealskin - Interview

When did you start to get interested in music?

Since I was a kid I remember music and performance created special magic for me. I used to record my voice on tape when I was quite little and had a lot of fun doing it.

Later after my first career I met one guy who had a home studio and lots of gadgets and there my investigation into music making, songwriting and recording began! It was totally ecstatic. Then I started my first band, Sargasmia.

If you were an advertisement, which would your slogan be?

Let your Voice be a true expression of your essence

Which is the part you enjoy the most about music?

It is the most beautiful and powerful tool of awakening and healing. I like making music for other people, catching their vibe, energy field and translating it into sound on my sessions Sound Mandala and in music production. I enjoy feeling the flow of inspiration and in a short time, preferably in one session translating a feeling, an idea, and an impression into a beautiful soundscape. Creating in the flow intuitively with a result that both my client and I can appreciate gives me lots of satisfaction. For me music creation is combining sounds in a pleasant harmonious way. I just see what feeling each sound evokes in me and continue weaving rhythms and melodies into a complete canvas.

Most artists say that through their art they learn more about themselves, heal injuries… In which aspects has music helped you?

Music is a powerful art, a medium of self exploration, healing, creation. It helped me reach my origins, my roots. In latest works I create music out of that intention, making it a place of power, a place of awakening and healing.

What does music mean to you?

It is my craft, my communication, way to express beauty and source of vital energy and inspiration

Who are your idols?

I don´t have idols since I am in music, but I admire artists with an authentic voice and own true identity. I love Bjork, Peruquois, Dhaffer Youssef, Aruna Sairam and many artists of root music.

If you didn’t like music, what would you like to do?

I would love to do performance and acting. Apart from making music I also love working with people. I do courses on voice healing and voice opening, music making. I love all sides of working with sound.

Do you consider that nowadays there are more or less opportunities for new artists? Why?

I believe there are lots of them! If one starts a project aligned with inner voice and true calling, it becomes a power, strength, a source of inspiration.

Many artists do not really know how to create a brand speaking from inner truth, how to put into form the gift, talent you have. What to communicate and how to be confident and solid creating an artistic project.

It is not about copying ready formulas. It is about taking a deeper look inside and growing your project from there.

What would your idyllic life as an artist be like?

My idyllic life would be to have a studio in the nature, tour with concerts. Launch events and festivals with my co-creators. Well, I am moving in that way!
